How tos: Mixing Prints Perfectly

Long before now, mixing prints was considered a fashion faux pas. In recent times, it totally reflects a fashion forward and edgy look. Mixing prints can look tacky if you don’t do things right. That’s why I’m gonna share with you some tips on how to graciously mix your prints.

How to mix prints:

Repeat colors- your prints should have at least one color in common.
You can either go for two prints with the same dominant color or choose a dominant color from one print and match that color with the second print.
The colors don’t have to match exactly but they have to be close enough that it’s clear they are meant to be together.

Mix a big print and a small print
Having prints in different sizes creates visual harmony. Think of prints in terms of sizes.

It's even possible to mix three prints without looking out of place. Stella Jadore shows us how- thin stripes, bold stripes and gingham prints (shirt, shorts, shoes).

Use a solid to break up prints
Choose a solid color that matches both prints, rather than having the prints layered on top of one another.

Mix two similar prints

Lolu also shows us that guys can freshly mix prints and look dapper.

Prints that come in similar scale but come in slightly different colors can layer beautifully. If you are after a conservative, monochromatic look, then you should try this.

Mix bold patterns with low contrast patterns

Mix polka dots with plaid or stripes

Mix black and white prints
You can never go wrong with different black and white prints. This is another option for beginner print mixers.

Mix stripes and florals

Mix two types of animal prints

Use your accessories in mixing prints- shoes, scarfs, bags, purses...

HOW TOS: Many ways to style a Shirt Dress

Reinvent new combinations of what you already own. Improvise. Become more creative. Not because you have to. Evolution is the secret for the next step- Karl Lagerfeld.

Every stylish person should be able to nicely restyle and revamp his/her wardrobe pieces. In order to maximize your wardrobe, you need to be able to repeat, revibe and revamp your pieces over and over, in different ways (no matter how small the changes are). I think it’s fun actually. Pick out a dress from your closet and just begin to imagine possible ways to style it with other pieces in your closet (nothing outside….). Try it- like a game. You will be amazed at how much you could do with that small or huge closet of yours. The whole concept of maximizing your wardrobe is majorly useful when it comes to your basics which you find yourself wearing very often.

Shirt dresses can be super versatile if you let them be. They've also been every girl’s must-have recently just like the Shift dresses. I have therefore decided to share possibly ways to style your shirt dress.

Add a longer layer to balance out a shorter hem- with a coat, jacket….

Make it an outer wear

Knot it

With or without a bottom layer

Go Bohemian

Think extraordinaire… totally love the way Ada of No Ordinary She styled her Shirt dress- layered with a skirt. That jacket is literally giving me live!

With shorts- try doing a half tuck.

As simple as it can be

Take it to the streets.

Throw on a scarf. Kicks? Yes please.

Dress it up. Try a knot.

With boots and thigh high Glads…

TRENDS: Lace and Lace ups

Straight outta the 70’s, the lace up trend is taking over the fashion scene in a big way. From laced clothing to lace up details, there is no stopping this trend (…just yet).

Add a laced piece to your wardrobe for a super girly and trendy touch this season. Buy them in tops, dresses, shorts etc. You can either go with full laced pieces or clothing with lace details.

Also, it's not so hard to notice the lace up trend- crisscrossing in bodysuits, dresses, jackets, playsuits, tops etc. This detail is usually around the chest area, arm or at the back.

Tip:
You might have to for-go your normal bra when dealing with this detail, as you don’t want it showing underneath. Lucky for you if you find one that works well with your normal bra. Some clothing with lace up detail will require you to wear a silicon or stick on bra. If not, you can go for a style bra that sports a deep V (Although the V might not always be deep enough- depending on the length of the lace up detail).

Lace up shoes, sandals and boots are also having their time. Do not miss out of these fun trends.

Slay in Lace!
